Hal Roth

A new classic from one of the world's most respected sailing authors

More than 35 years ago, Hal Roth quit his job as a journalist and went sailing. Since then, he's logged more than 200,000 sea miles. Along the way, Roth also has authored eight voyaging classics, including the 1978 bestseller After 50,000 Miles.

Taking that book as its starting point, this handsome new volume incorporates the new technologies and discoveries of the last quarter century along with another 150,000 miles of experience.

A compendium of mature, time-tested sea wisdom from one of the world's most respected sailing writers, How to Sail Around the World will tell the reader:

  • How to choose and equip a sailboat for long-distance cruising, with an emphasis on simplicity and a modest budget
  • How to plan and conduct a voyage anywhere in the world
  • How to master the arts of navigation, anchoring, and daily life aboard in exotic places
  • How to cope with storms at sea--the most complete and authoritative treatise on this critical topic ever published

John Kretschmer

"I know you'll want to read more after you finish Sailing a Serious Ocean. And be warned, you'll very likely want to sail with John, perhaps across an ocean." -- DALLAS MURPHY, AUTHOR OF ROUNDING THE HORN

After sailing 300,000 miles and weathering dozens of storms in all the world's oceans, John Kretschmer has plenty of stories and advice to share. John's offshore training passages sell out a year in advance and his entertaining presentations are popular at boat shows and yacht clubs all over the English speaking world. John's talent for storytelling enchants his audience as it soaks up the lessons he learned during his oftenchallenging voyages. Now you can take a seat next to John--at a lesser cost--and get the knowledge you need to fulfill your own dream of blue-water adventure.

In Sailing a Serious Ocean, John tells you what to expect when sailing the oceans and shows how to sail safely across them. His tales of storm encounters and other examples of extreme seamanship will help you prepare for your journey and give you confidence to handle any situation—even heavy weather. Through his personal stories, John will guide you through the whole process of choosing the right boat, outfitting with the right gear, planning your route, navigating the ocean, and understanding the nuances of life at sea.

Our oceans are beautiful yet unpredictable—water that is at one moment a natural mirror for the glowing sun can turn into a foamy, raging wall of fury. John knows our oceans, and he is one of the best teachers of taming and enjoying them. Before you set off across the big blue, turn to John for his inspirational stories and hard-learned advice and discover the serious sailor in you.

Nigel Calder

Authoritative, practical, and hands-on information on reading and relying on electronic and paper nautical charts

The classic How to Read a Nautical Chart explains every aspect of electronic and paper nautical charts: how a chart is assembled, how to gauge the accuracy of chart data, how to read charts created by other governments, how to use information such as scale, projection technique and datum that every chart contains; how not to get fooled or run aground by overzooming. Nigel Calder teaches you how to squeeze every ounce of information out of a nautical chart (on your GPS, chartplotter, or nav station) and understand the limits of accuracy for all charts, paper and electronic, raster and vector.

This much-awaited second edition addresses the changes in the world of electronic charting, integrated onboard navigation systems, as well as radar overlays and AIS and their interfacing with charts. A new chapter on the Wiki Revolution explores the mechanisms allowing you to incorporate user-generated content into navigational products and share this content with others—harnessing a user-base never before possible. Calder also explores how 3D-technology and real-time depth and weather information is creating interactive charting capacities that are fundamentally changing how we navigate. Calder's unique, practical insights will help you to navigate safely for years to come.

Herb McCormick

To anyone interested in small-boat cruising and voyaging, the names Lin and Larry Pardey need no introduction. As world-girdling sailors who roamed the planet on a pair of small, engineless boats that they built themselves, the Pardeys established their hard-earned reputations by eloquently (and sometimes controversially) telling their stories through a series of best-selling books and manuals, and countless seminars and boat shows.

They have been called the first couple of cruising and have remained true to their mantra: Go simple, go small, go now. And after 200,000 miles of cruising under sail, they ve demonstrated that the dream of voyaging over the horizon is not only attainable, it's affordable. The children of modest, middle-class families, their message of accessibility into the world of cruising of taking your own floating home anywhere has proved irresistible to tens of thousands of sailors. Lin and Larry Pardey became cruising royalty not solely due to their impressive deeds but also through their rare ability to share what they d learned across multiple media.

Seemingly every offshore cruiser knows who they are and what they represent. Or do they? In As Long as It s Fun, the biography of Lin and Larry Pardey, Herb McCormick recounts their remarkable sailing career from their early days in Southern California to their two circumnavigations to their current life in a quiet cove in New Zealand. Through interviews with their families, friends, and critics, McCormick delves deeply into the couple s often-controversial opinions, sometimes-tenuous marriage, and amazing list of accomplishments.

As Long as It s Fun is as much a love story as it is a sea yarn, and, like all such stories, it s not without complications . . . which makes it not only a sailing tale but also a human one.

Anyone can tie knots: learn just one or two from this book and you will be glad you bought it. Learn ten, and it could make a difference in your life. This is because there is endless pleasure to be had from the study and practice of knot tying, this fundamental but fascinating process being an art, craft, science and philosophy, all rolled into one.

This book contains over 150 knots and splices and is guaranteed to amuse for hours on end. It makes sense to shed our over dependence on buckles, clips and zip fasteners, safety pins and superglue, when a length of cord or rope and the right choice of knot works at least as well and often better.

The types of knots in this book range from figure-of-eight knots, bowlines and sheet bends, crossing knots, wrap-and-tuck knots, and more. A full glossary and index will help readers learn to tie knots of all kinds.

World Cruising Routes

Jimmy Cornell

Since its publication in 1987, World Cruising Routes has become one of the best-selling nautical publications in the world. World Cruising Routes, and its companion volumes World Cruising Destinations, World Voyage Planner and Cornell’s Ocean Atlas, are to be found on board every long distance cruising yacht, and provide ocean navigators all the information they need, from the planning stages of a voyage to its successful completion.

Since 1987, offshore navigation has undergone a number of major changes, and this new edition has been thoroughly revised to meet the requirements and expectations of the current generation of offshore sailors. The revisions were dictated primarily by the information contained in the latest pilot charts, which required a rethinking of some old established route planning tactics, many of which are no longer valid. Another important change made in this edition is the addition of detailed waypoints on some well-travelled routes, as well as the inclusion of alternative routes leading to popular cruising destinations. Compared to previous editions, where the waypoints were listed mainly for planning purposes, in this new edition every waypoint along each route is listed, enabling the navigator to plot a course for any passage from start to finish. One new feature added to this edition is that of windgrams depicting a summary of wind conditions for the month when passages are undertaken along some of the most commonly sailed routes.
In direct response to current navigational methods, most routes have been redesigned to provide essential passage planning details. New routes have been added to areas rarely explored until recently by cruising yachts, from Greenland and Micronesia to China and the Northwest Passage.

Described as the bible of cruising sailors, World Cruising Routes is the definitive reference book for long-distance navigators. This totally revised and updated edition has drawn on the latest weather information available to provide the most comprehensive aid to planning a safe voyage to any part of the world. With over 1000 sailing routes in all the oceans of the world, from the tropics to the high latitudes of the Arctic and Antarctic, it contains essential information on winds, currents, regional and seasonal weather as well as optimum times for individual passages.
Geared specifically to the needs of offshore navigators, this comprehensive guide contains all the necessary information for planning a passage in any of the world’s oceans. This seventh edition assesses the consequences of climate change on sailing routes and provides over 6,000 waypoints to assist skippers in planning individual passages. Much of the information contained in the following pages was gathered during the author’s three circumnavigations. It is the perfect one-stop reference for planning a voyage anywhere in the world.

This is a companion volume to both World Voyage Planner, which offers invaluable planning strategies and advice on long-distance voyaging, as well as World Cruising Destinations, which gives practical information on all the maritime nations of the world with details of their main cruising attractions, climate, formalities, marinas, repair facilities, charter operators, cruising guides and websites.

"Secrets' is the modern Bowditch, written so clearly that navigation and seamanship will be comprehensible to anyone..."

"It's a great book. The prose is simple and clear . . ."
--John Vigor, author of The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat

"It is a fine piece of work and should be read by anyone contemplating coastal cruising or blue water voyages. It definitely deserves a place in the offshore yacht's library . . ."
--Ted Brewer, yacht designer, author, and offshore racing and cruising sailor

Be a Better Skipper

In the night, wind, rain, fog, big seas, strong currents, or congested waters, when there’s no time for textbook seamanship solutions, what you need are shortcuts and techniques that work quickly and reliably every time.

Distilled from the vast accumulated lore of seamanship and navigation, here are the absolute essentials--185 techniques that work without fail in the pilothouse or the exposed cockpit or flying bridge of a shorthanded sail- or powerboat. John Jamieson shows you how to:

  • Set up a clipboard chart table for cockpit use
  • Avoid hazards with danger bearings or a GPS grid highway
  • Estimate current speeds with the 50-90-100 rule
  • Track other boats in poor visibility using radar plots and bearing drift
  • Sail home without a rudder or get your twin-screw boat home on one working engine
  • Dock or anchor under any conditions
  • And much, much more

Even in this age of electronic navigation you need to know how to eyeball your boat through any situation. Each of the techniques in this cut-to-the-chase book has shown itself to be absolutely repeatable. It will work this time, the next time,
and the time a er that, in conditions fair or foul.

Rescue of the Bounty
Disaster and Survival in Superstorm Sandy

$25

Michael J. Tougias

The harrowing story of the sinking and rescue of Bounty—the tall ship used in the classic 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty—which was caught in the path of Hurricane Sandy with sixteen aboard

On Thursday, October 25, 2012, Captain Robin Walbridge made the fateful decision to sail Bounty from New London, Connecticut, to St. Petersburg, Florida. Walbridge was well aware that a hurricane was forecast to travel north from the Caribbean toward the eastern seaboard. Yet the captain was determined to sail. As he explained to his crew of fifteen: a ship is always safer at sea than in port. He intended to sail “around the hurricane” and told the crew that anyone who did not want to come on the voyage could leave the ship—there would be no hard feelings. As fate would have it, no one took the captain up on his offer.

Four days into the voyage, Superstorm Sandy made an almost direct hit on Bounty. The vessel’s failing pumps could not keep up with the incoming water. The ship began to lose power as it was beaten and rocked by hurricane winds that spanned eight hundred miles. A few hours later, in the dark of night, the ship suddenly overturned ninety miles off the North Carolina coast in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” sending the crew tumbling into an ocean filled with towering thirty-foot waves. The coast guard then launched one of the most complex and massive rescues in its history, flying two Jayhawk helicopter crews into the hurricane and lowering rescue swimmers into the raging seas again and again, despite the danger to their own lives.

In the uproar heard across American media in the days following, a single question persisted: Why did the captain decide to sail? Through hundreds of hours of interviews with the crew members, their families, and the coast guard, the masterful duo of Michael J. Tougias and Douglas A. Campbell creates an in-depth portrait of the enigmatic Captain Walbridge, his motivations, and what truly occurred aboard Bounty during those terrifying days at sea.

Dripping with suspense and vivid high-stakes drama, Rescue of the Bounty is an unforgettable tale about the brutality of nature and the human will to survive.

Coyote Lost at Sea
The Story of Mike Plant, America’s Daring Solo Circumnavigator

$25

Julia Plant

When Coyote and its skipper, Mike Plant, went missing mid-Atlantic in November 1992, the sailing world held its breath. Now, twenty years later, the story around the mystery, tragedy, and enigma is told at last "[Plant] is as close as yachting gets to a James Dean character, going his own way, in his own time, but always with an eye to the sea." (Barbara Lloyd, New York Times).  Mike Plant came to ocean racing late; as an American in a sport dominated by European sailors he was an underdog. And yet he won his class in the 1986-87 Around Alone 24,000-mile race, beating competitors with more experience, among them Hal Roth. Plant led an adrenaline-fueled life, full of seemingly suicidal adventures and yet his charismatic personality attracted hundreds of friends. Told in the style of Into the Wild, Coyote Lost at Sea transcends the sailing story and explores the intimate details of Plant's intense personality, upbringing, and experiences that created the fiercely original character of Mike Plant. It explores the events and circumstances leading to Plant's phenomenal success as a singlehanded ocean-racer, as well as the factors contributing to the failure of his high-tech and controversial boat, Coyote.

- How a reefing staysail simplifies your sailing, and why a custom-fit is necessary.

- What features make for an ideal snatch block and which is the most user-friendly.

In addition, you’ll understand the key advantages of a mainsheet traveler vs. simple mainsheet rigs, find out what makes the best rigid boom vang, and learn how to properly inspect a trysail (including head, clew, tack, leech and luff)!

While a new mainsail will likely consume the biggest share of your sails budget, don’t forget about the supporting cast of characters. Cruising sailors, in particular, need to think carefully about storm trysails, reefing staysails, and sailing hardware like snatch blocks.

Learn which sails and related hardware are right for your needs with this insightful e-book. Order your copy today!

With this new e-book from Practical Sailor, you’ll be fully prepared to avert—or respond to—MOB situations by learning about the necessary gear and proven recovery procedures.

Tethers:

MOB Recovery & Recover Aids:
From MOB modules and throw bags to the right recovery techniques for your boat, Practical Sailor explores the equipment and procedures that will be most valuable when you hear “Man Overboard!”
