“When I’m out sailing, people come up next to the boat and tell me it is the most beautiful boat they’ve ever seen,” says captain Ian Bowman of Maya, a gaff-rigged sloop designed by John Atkin. At 20 ft. 3 3/4 in., with an eye-catching scarlet covestripe and matching jib, her traditional lines turn heads. I should know, since Maya is in our racing division at the Tasman Bay Yacht Club in Whakatū Nelson, Aotearoa New Zealand. Every week, Maya elicits a few smiles with her wooden mast, gleaming toerails and 6-ft. bowsprit. She brings old-school class to our all-fiberglass fleet.
